Semana de Pascua en Guápiles

Me volvi a escapar a la casa de mis padres en Guápiles, ya confesé que este sitio encierra mucho de lo que me hace pensar y me hace recordar.

He caminado como nunca por las calles de esta ciudad tan caliente, he leído, he hecho deporte, he visitado a amigos y me he metido en las salvajes montañas de la Universidad EARTH, en donde se nos ha caído Jacobo por un risco y casi se nos va... dichosamente encontramos un veterinario y el pobre labrador ya esta descansando y en recuperación.

Me he topado además con "la barrera mental y de visión que genera el vivir en un lugar alejado del centro del país, de la realidad del mundo", eso lo extrapolo de los comentarios de Emanuel Paniagua, Ingeniero en Sistema de INTEL que recién ha regresado de Malasia y gran amigo mio.

Y es que regresar al pueblo en donde todo parece ir lento y en donde la velocidad de intercambio de bienes y servicios va como a cuenta gotas, me sorprende inicialmente y finalmente me preocupa.

Y me preocupa porque la velocidad del mundo es distinta a la de mi pueblo, porque el impacto de los buenos negocios y de las buenas iniciativas sociales que existen en este país, parecen no llegar.

Viaje sobre el cielo. Playa Curú, CRC

Me fui este fin de semana a Playa Curú (que por cierto no sale ni en Google maps). Es una reserva privada que además de playa, arena y sol, resguarda interesantes proyectos de conservación de especies en peligro de extinción.

Me decidí a tener una buena experiencia manejando kayak a unos 300 m de la playa, y puedo asegurar que era como viajar sobre el cielo. Apenas unos metros ya adentro no logramos ver más que el verde azulado del agua del lugar.

En ese preciso instante, cuando la adrenalina sube y uno quiere contarle a todo el mundo que ha encontrado el paraíso, me acordé que solo llevaba mi cámara digital y mi buena memoria, para hacer trascendente el momento.

Idealmente hubiera deseado que mi iPod captara alguna super señal satelital que le dejara conectarse a internet y así hacer eterno el momento in situ... no obstante, tengo que conformarme con escribir este mensaje horas más tarde de la travesía y adjuntar alguna foto y video que todavía resguardan mi paso por el cielo de hoy por la mañana.

Un matrimonio que ama la vida humana.

En lo práctico y sin considerar otras variables, diría que ser un matrimonio abierto a la vida es no utilizar ningún método anticonceptivo que impida el inicio de una nueva vida después de una relación conyugal.

Buscando un poco más y considerando más variables, se puede pensar en las miles de ocasiones que matrimonios jóvenes que usan pastillas o acuden al preservativo, han impedido que la posibilidad de una vida nueva llegue.

Lo anterior no será tan grave como el aborto (sin considerar que el uso de pastillas implica que se puedan presentar abortos sin que la pareja se dé cuenta de ello), pero de cierto modo, eliminar la posibilidad de que una nueva vida pueda iniciarse, es también impedir que la alegría de compartir la vida con "el amor eterno", se extienda y lleve a una vida matrimonial plena y fecunda.

Si se buscan justificantes para que un matrimonio opte por el uso de anticonceptivos, se podría acudir a los altos costos del nivel de vida, también el hecho de que ambos cónyuges trabajen con horarios exagerados y si se hila más profundo, algunos coincidirán en que "no me siento preparado para asumir la llegada de un bebé".

En el fondo se podría elucidar alguna actitud de egoísmo, de autoponerse en el centro de la vida familiar y de eliminar de la escena esa posibilidad de una vida humana.

A dos años del nacimiento de nuestro primer hijo y a 8 días del mes 7 de nuestro segundo pequeño

Con la inocencia oculta llegaste al mundo entre alegrías,

con la firmeza y la seguridad de renovar con tus manos lo cotidiano

y hasta lo efímero fue eterno y en cada gota de luz dejaste tu estela.

La belleza fue tomando forma en tus manos

y la inteligencia fue más que una simple virtud,

fue esencia de lo real y lo sublime 

y transformas al mundo

y me transformas a mí,
mujer, fémina, hija del sol, hija de Dios.

Y prorrumpiste en lo establecido 

y rompiste paradigmas antes inviolables,

y siendo solo así, única, mujer.

No cambiaste tu apariencia, 

no cambiaste tu sonrisa, 

no caminaste a prisa para lograr con tu suave caricia,
lo que logran los batallones de guerra más osados y violentos:
una victoria límpida y eterna.

Es tu mano luchadora, 

mano de madre, de novia, de esposa;

y tu mano es auténtica, dulce y sencilla

y con ella limpias mi llanto, sanas mi alma, abrigas mi espalda...

Que cortas encontré las palabras para decirte hoy que eres única, 

que espantas mis miedos más profundos

y que llenas de luz mi rostro y me arrullas 

y ya no quiero nada más en el mundo.

Oh mujer llévame de nuevo,

a tus manos campesinas, a tus manos luchadoras,

y lleva como prendedor mi mirada de niño 

que no te pierde de vista porque te necesita.

Del amor y otras locuras.

      

      Siempre me dieron ganas de transformar a mi entorno, mi colegio, mi familia, mi casa y hasta a mi universidad.

       Pensaba que el cambio se gestaba desde afuera, me explico: con la organización de actividades que despertaran la pasión y el interés de la gente que me rodea y esto con la única finalidad de hacer que las cosas pasen, que las cosas se den, que las organizaciones respondieran positivamente al cambio (ojalá radical), que proponían los expositores; todos de gran calibre intelectual y humano.

       Esa "estrategia", que además me ha deparado much@s detractores de mis ideas, entre ellos colegas de trabajo, gente con la que se trabaja hombro a hombro; también me ha llevado a evolucionar, me ha llevado a descifrar que el verdadero cambio se gesta desde adentro, desde la misma esencia de cada uno.

     Un graffiti de mi colegio decía: el que quiera mover al mundo, que se mueva primero. Un santo contemporáneo indicaba: 

    Bendita perseverancia la del borrico de la noria! -Siempre al mismo paso. Siempre las mismas vueltas. - Un día y otro: todos iguales.

       Sin eso, no habría madurez en los frutos, ni lozanía en el huerto, ni tendría aromas el jardín....

     Y hoy más que nunca sé que los cambios se gestan desde adentro y esos cambios radicales se dan dentro de los más profundo del ser mismo, de manera que, luego de la lucha interior por ser mejor, un espíritu deportivo y una buena sonrisa son ese catalítico y conductor del cambio.

   

Innovation and research as key changes in a low-income country´s pharmacy school: The Case of Pharmacy School, University of Costa Rica.

“Creativity is a process of developing and expressing novel ideas that are likely to be useful. The end result of the creative process is an innovation, where innovation is the embodiment, combination, and or synthesis of knowledge in novel, relevant, valued new products, processes or services”.¹ This statement suggests that in order to innovate, a country must follow a solid creative process and its universities can´t be out of that plan. Innovation thus, refers to incremental and emergent, radical and revolutionary changes in every aspect. Even the improvement of a known product or service can be considered as an innovation.

Costa Rica is a third world country seeking to overcome that veil that has stopped it from growing. Even so, its health system is available to every Costa Rican and world habitant without any cost. The pharmaceutical industry in Costa Rica was established nearly 50 years ago promoted by few entrepreneurs. The introduction of this important industry to the country has supplied many of the needs regarding the health of Costa Ricans. Nowadays, this small Central American country has one of the greatest life spans of the world (nearly 78 years) showing that our system works but is still not optimal. National pharmaceutical industry has experienced a slow development compared to other countries. More effort has to be done in order to accomplish higher goals and produce more innovative pharmaceutical products without leaving aside the good manufacturing practices. In hand with this, the local companies should take into account the innovative ideas created in the academic field, made by students, teachers or both of them.

Since two years ago (from 2008 until now), the School of Pharmacy from University of Costa Rica and its council (one of the first founded academic organizations in Costa Rica), decided to improve the skills of creativity and research for its students and its teachers, respectively.

The objective of this paper is to give a general idea of how these changes in this school have altered the student´s dynamics and how the relationship of our school with local pharmacy companies has improved radically by researching on crucial topics like the pharmacological activity of endemic natural products.

Since 1990 until now, almost 50 projects have been done in the school.  Even when this school is one of the oldest in the University of Costa Rica, the recorded data on researching projects have never existed as a formal database; these 50 projects have been taken from the official website of the school.² From these projects, the 50% of them are related to local natural products. For example, the research on Quassia amara´s (Hombre Grande) in vivo gastrointestinal activity has developed three important research projects which have served as key projects to develop the relationship with LISAN S.A., a local pharmaceutical generic company. Even when the in vivo activity was tested with the pure water extract and not with the quassins (the pure compounds that are supposed to have the activity, the relationship with the company and the outstanding results have created a trustable environment with them and more detailed and deeper research projects are being written to be developed in upcoming years. These projects are based on developing in vitro activity methods to study the cytotoxic potential of the most useful plants in Costa Rica, but they will take place in a close future.

Unfortunately, those students who preferred deeper research topics based on in vitro activity of pure secondary metabolites or well characterized crude extracts, have not found the right environment to perform their researches at University of Costa Rica. They had to seek new academic sponsors outside the school. In this way, two interesting investigations have been done with the Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology and Biotechnology from Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany. One of them demonstrated the wound healing activity of a water-based extract from a local root bark of a tree by stimulating migration and proliferation of fibroblasts, and the other one showed cytotoxicity and apoptosis induction of Costa Rican secondary metabolites. The results are still unpublished and are being evaluated to define the degree of innovation and if they are useful in the pharmaceutical industry; in order to be patented. If a patent comes, this will be the first patent of the school since its foundation.

The Albert-Ludwigs University at Freiburg possesses a wide range of research and development labs with multidisciplinary teams with one aim in common, discover and innovate. The experience of these two students in this university have opened their minds and made them realize that pharmacy is much more than what they think. These experiences gathered here made them want to change the pharmacy in Costa Rica, enhancing the investigation of this small country and changing the minds of scientists in order to exploit the knowledge and desire to innovate.  

Regarding innovation, the school has opened a new course named ‘Innovation Management for Health Sciences’, this course is now official in the curriculum of the career. The topic of creativity is based on the improvement of known products or services; this is critical in the methodology. The effect of the course in the student´s dynamics is evident; from the nearly 100 new ideas generated in the course (from 2008 until now) and which are product of lateral thinking techniques based on the Bono experience, all of them have been evaluated by important institutions that promote the entrepreneurship environment in Costa Rica. They have participated in entrepreneurship and risk capital contests. From these contests almost 3 ideas have won the first prize and two of them have been established as formal small companies (see chart 1). The University of Costa Rica by its academic mentors has given the right formation to students in themes like intellectual property rights. Also, the University of Costa Rica by the Unit of Technological Transfer- PROINNOVA- runs with all expenses of the trademark registration. The monitoring of the students and their company is a daily responsibility of the mentor and PROINNOVA.

We consider that this new way of thinking (reflected in the curriculum), has to be instilled from college. The Schools of Pharmacy in Costa Rica, and mainly that from the University of Costa Rica, must ensure that the new generation of future scientists and researchers think in that way, promoting innovation for the future. Several specialties have to be introduced in those schools to achieve this goal such as: genetics, biotechnology, molecular and cellular biology, and strengthen the clinical pharmacology (these specialties are well established in the German Universities). These changes will allow the country to move on this globalized world and fulfill the development expectations of innovation creating new opportunities for young professionals. Defining these new roles and strengthening knowledge is looking into the future, with the hand of the local pharmaceutical industry and the academy.

De virtudes y defectos

Hay una cualidad que tengo.

Cuando estoy en un grupo de trabajo, con rapidez y facilidad me doy cuenta de las competencias reales y las competencias mejorables que tienen las personas que lo conforman.

Eso también me permite observar cuando mi personalidad, mis ideas y mis argumentos no son bien acogidos y generan... digamos: malestar en quienes piensan diferente y sé cuando también generan animadversión. Sobre todo en temas de fe católica entre otros.

Y lo considero virtud porque en el ambiente abundan las personas jóvenes y con un tiempo de vida profesional corto que tienen grandes potencialidades, a los cuáles logro apreciar mucho y que en algún momento habrá oportunidad de animarles y ayudarles en su desempeño (sobre todo en pequeños detalles imperceptibles).

Esta cualidad también me deja ver cuando el egoísmo y la arrogancia son los elementos que abundan en una persona... y con esas personas es en donde creo se puede practicar más la caridad y lo que diría en buen tico: "el aguante" que uno tiene.

Comprobado esta que la arrogancia y el egoísmo llevan a un éxito profesional efímero, tarea importante será ayudarles a estos a que esos vicios se acaben para que su éxito sea eterno.

Cualidad divino tesoro... y hay que usarla con prudencia.
